Closing Day Produces Eventful Miles

The final race card at The Red Mile featured some of the world’s greatest trotters and older horses. Headlining the card was the 120th edition of the $508,000 Kentucky Futurity and its filly counterpart, the 47th edition of the $287,000 Kentucky Filly Futurity. Also on the stellar closing card was the $70,000 Allerage Mare Pace, $131,200 Allerage Open Trot, $119,200 Allerage Mare Trot and the $155,000 Allerage Open Pace.

The 120th Kentucky Futurity on Sunday

The 120th Kentucky Futurity caps off the Red Mile Grand Circuit meet for 2012 on Sunday, October 7. Thirteen three year old trotting colts were declared for the stake, resulting in two divisions carded as races five and six on the bill. The top finishers will return for the second heat in race nine and if there is not a repeat winner from heat one, the three winners will compete in a 'winner take all' race-off.

Week two features the International Stallion Stakes (INSS) for all divisions of two year olds, beginning with the freshman filly trotters returning to kick off the week’s events in three splits worth a total of $293,300.

The Red Mile contested six total divisions of the Bluegrass series on their first Matinee card of the season on Sunday, September 30. Three-year-old colt trotters raced in the $227,000 Southwind Farms Bluegrass, while the three-year-old filly trotters went in the $211,000 Cantab Hall Bluegrass.

  I love The Red Mile and in turn, Lexington, KY. The time spent there is always a highlight, largely because of the local knowledge I have gained over the years. So...I  have put together a few suggestions based on my personal experience and tastes, in the hope that those coming to Lexington during The Red Mile's fall Grand Circuit meet might enjoy all that this charming city has to offer.

 The 2012 Kentucky Sire Stakes (KYSS) season wrapped up Sunday night (Sept. 9) at The Red Mile with eight $250,000 finals for 2 and 3 year olds of both gaits featured on the card. Two sophomores were able to defend their championships, including the 3-year-old filly trotter Northern Miss Hall and the 3-year-old colt pacer Bolt The Duer.
